Creating an Inclusive Community: Texts and Contexts

Sunday, May 28, 2017 • 3 Sivan 5777

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us, Beverly Tsacoyianis, Melinda Lejman, and a guest speaker TBA as we explore how to embody inclusivity as a congregation and as individuals in our greater Memphis community. We'll begin with defining inclusion and exclusion, and discuss the Jewish textual grounds (especially with promoting tzedek - justice and briyut - health) for including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who are handicapped or learning-disabled, or racial religious, and sexual minorities. The workshop will begin with a focus on LGBT issues but workshop participants are welcome to reflect on other ways we can be more inclusive and ways we can bring Jewish texts into this conversation. This workshop is open to all, but will have a dedicated portion and resources for parents on how to discuss exclusion and inclusion with young children, tweens, and teens.
