A FEW PRE-SHABBAT WORDS FROM RABBI AARON
Strength and Love
Chagall drew a powerful picture of Moses passing the reins of leadership to Joshua. What emotions do you read on the faces of Moses and Joshua? Moses has weathered so many storms during this forty year trek, and he is all-too-aware that Mount Nebo, overlooking the Promised Land, will be his final resting place. He can go no further.
If you look with your heart you'll see that Moses also understood that the unfolding journey was about something larger than himself. Moses, knowing that time was short, prodded God with the poignant observation that the Israelites needed a new shepherd to follow. The faces and the hands say a great deal about the intimate bond between Moses and Joshua. They also might contain the threshold moment, the humbling truths of mortality and legacy.
No less important are the words Moses shares with the new leader. Over and over again, Moses repeats - chazak ve'ematz - be strong, be courageous! Moses knows that his pupil has great strength within him, and he passionately drives the message home: "Feel my strong grip. I won't be able to hold you much longer. My journey is ending. Don't shrink from the challenges ahead. You will be tested again and again, but God - who guided my steps - will also be with you. The people will be loyal to you. Go forward and inherit the land!"
