A Few Pre-Holiday and Pre-Shabbat Words from Rabbi Aaron
Book of the Heart
We're rounding the bend, from Sukkot to Shmini Atzeret to Simchat Torah. We're completing the Torah and starting all over again. I think it's more of a spiral than a circle. While we will revisit God and Adam and Eve in the Garden, we are not the same people we were a year ago. So much water under the bridge. So while the texts are familiar, our own lives lend additional layers of meaning to our turning the texts over and over. It's a bit like wine that matures as it ages. We experience our joys and our pains and all these moments leave their imprint on the text, the way the carved valentine heart and its enclosed initials soften their way into the narrative of the tree that bears that proud emblem of love.
On Simchat Torah we see Moses ascend Mount Nebo. After looking out upon the Promised Land, he will die on the mountaintop. A midrash teaches us a that Moses slips into eternity with a kiss from God. The Torah recounts the greatness of the fallen leader, and the last word of the text is Israel - ישראל. God - with His own Hands - buries Moshe, the human who became God's Face to Face confidant. And we begin again with the cosmos exploding into life "in the beginning" - בראשית. God will - with His own Hands - shape the first earthling, Adam – אדם – from the earth –אדמה. From the end to the beginning again, from that last Lammed to a Bet – לב – Lev, the Torah is our heartbeat. Our people's story serves as the water in which we swim. We dance in celebration, holding our treasured diary.
It is a new year. After the fasting and feasting, after the guests and praying for rain and the remembering time of yizkor, we step into the year. There is a great mantra found within our supplementary prayers on Shabbat morning: we were created to praise, to labor and to love. Each of those purposes is a vital aspect of the balance we seek. May we all embrace Torah and may we feel strengthened by the love of kehilla. And may all Creation be blessed by the work of our hands.
